Job Description
At Houston Methodist, the Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) contributes to the safe operation of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Department. The MRSO is a member of the direct patient care team and is fully competent in all aspects of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) safety and exams. This position is responsible for ensuring that proper policies and procedures for day-to-day magnetic resonance (MR) safety are enforced and serves as a mentor to MRI staff and students by utilizing skills and knowledge to help train and educate others in aspects of MRI safety.
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic, team focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results. Collaborates with all members of the patient care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner.
- Collaborates with department leadership, MRI physicist and Medical Director to effectively implement protocols and objectives with team members that result in optimization of patient throughput specific to established MRI safety.
- Participates on relevant committees or groups responsible for the safety and welfare of personnel.
- Uses peer-to-peer accountability towards department goals for retention and employee engagement.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Ensures that adequate written safety procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures, and operating instructions are issued and updated in consultation with Medical Resonance Medical Doctor (MRMD) and Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE).
- Reports back to the MRMD in a timely manner on all MR identified safety-related issues.
- Maintains accessibility at all times to operators of active Medical Resonance equipment.
- Ensures that appropriate measures for minimizing risks to health that arise from the use of or exposure to the MR equipment, as per the direction of the MRMD, are implemented and monitored. Ensures that proper policies and procedures for day-to-day MR safety are enforced.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Supports overall MRI Safety at point of care by advising the Medical staff and MRI tech as needed and executes the MR safety practices/policies established by the MRI safety committee.
- Ensures that medical, technical, nursing, and all other relevant staff groups who may be exposed to the MRI environment are educated and updated appropriately with regard to safety requirements. Maintains records of the personnel who have been educated appropriately as to the safety requirements.
- Develops, documents and executes in conjunction with and under the authority of the MRMD, safe working procedures for the MR environment. Monitors appropriate quality measurements to minimize risks to staff and patients. Provides expertise in root cause analyses, solutions meetings, etc. related to MRI adverse events. Understanding legal implications of the work environment.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Ensures utilization of established process/policy for purchasing and testing of all MR equipment utilized within the department.
- Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Maintains expertise in MR safety protocols, policies and industry standards.
- Actively participates in special projects, department initiatives or shared governance activities and seeks opportunities to expand learning with a focus on continual development and takes appropriate action. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.

EDUCATION
- Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
WORK EXPERIENCE - Three years' experience as an MRI Technologist
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED - ARRT-MR - Radiologic Technologist - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ARRT) OR
- ARMRIT - Registered Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist OR
- CMRT - Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist - State Licensure AND
- MRSO - Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (ABMRS) within 1 year AND
- BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
- Ability to work independently; capable of handling challenging/difficult diagnostic procedures and patient care situations. Demonstrates sound judgment and executes above average clinical skills
- Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems to include, Hospital / Radiology Information Systems and Office software to maintain patient and exam documents.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers.
- Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision including, organizing workflow and actively participating in problem-solving.
