Nurse Practitioner NP Overview The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) will have a multifaceted role, caring for patients in all locations within MGH newborn services, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Special Care Nursery (SCN) and in the delivery room. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) The NNP will be responsible for managing a case load of critically ill newborns in collaboration with an attending neonatologist. The nurse practitioner team follows a designated group of babies from admission through discharge, managing patients with varied medical and surgical diagnoses, performing procedures appropriate for the NICU scope of practice, providing psychosocial support to families and managing family meetings. The NNP functions within a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes and family centered care. Effective communication skills, participation in resident mentoring and teaching, and a desire to support the ongoing growth of the professional role are important elements. Additionally, the NNP will provide clinical consultation for newborns and infants in other areas of the hospital upon request. Delivery Room/Triage services The NNP will provide delivery room (DR) coverage in a busy high risk delivery service. DR coverage/triage services responsibilities include attending high risk deliveries, providing neonatal resuscitation, evaluating newborns in the delivery room and newborn nurseries. The DR NNP will provide all necessary in-house and outpatient prenatal neonatology consultations requested by obstetric staff. In addition, the DR NNP will provide necessary support and consultation for primary care pediatricians attending in newborn nurseries upon request. They will be responsible for admission and first day in-hospital care for all Level II infants that they admit. The NNP will work collaboratively with an in house neonatologist. In collaboration with obstetric, nursing and NICU medical staff, the role also involves direct management of patient flow within newborn medicine service and determination of bed availability and admission destination. Special Care Nursery (SCN) The NNP will manage infants in the Special Care Nursery as a primary provider in collaboration with supervising physician. This involves daily rounding with a multidisciplinary team, daily comprehensive assessments, review of patient data, and development of plans for a caseload of infants. Diagnoses are varied and include those infants who are experiencing delayed transition, hypoglycemic infants, late preterm infants, convalescing preterm infants, and NAS infants. Responsible for daily care, coordinating and planning discharge home, supporting and updating families, conducting family meetings. Principal Duties And Responsibilities Current position includes shift rotation with day, night, weekend and holiday coverage. Day coverage includes NICU and SCN shifts. Night and weekend coverage is in the delivery room and NICU. Manages the health care of patients within Newborn Services through advanced health assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation in a collaborative practice agreement with a physician. Develops treatment plans, orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests, treats patients with acute problems including illnesses and minor injuries following a predetermined protocol in a collaborative practice agreement with a physician. Coordinates the care of select patient populations to ensure promotion of health and wellness through education of patients and families, coordination of services and placing referrals. Coordinates patient transfers and admissions within Newborn services. Participates in professional development and lifelong learning, including participation in resident medical education and training. Participates in continuing education, quality improvement initiatives, clinical outcome evaluation and monitoring as well as medical and nursing research. Qualifications Professional licensure in Massachusetts with authorization to practice as an APRN required MSN And Current NP Certification Required Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is required.
