Job Summary  

UT Southwestern Medical Center is hiring a Radiation Safety Specialist.

The Radiation Safety Program provides radiation safety services to UT Southwestern Medical Center, University Hospitals, Parkland Health and its associated clinics, and Children's Health and its associated clinics. The Radiation Safety Specialist will assist in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive radiation safety program, including developing and providing radiation safety trainings, performing audits to ensure regulatory compliance, and maintaining records as required per regulatory standards. The Radiation Safety Specialist position is part of our Radioactive Materials Program. The Radioactive Materials Program holds a broad-scope RAM license that covers multiple Nuclear Medicine clinics, 100 RAM sublicenses to PIs for research, interventional radiology, and radiation oncology procedures. The Radioactive Materials program also covers our cyclotron facility, use of Gamma Knife and GammaPod for radiation therapies, and cutting edge technologies including PET MR for nuclear medicine research and PET LINAC for adaptive radiation therapy.

 

NOTES: The Safety Specialist position in the Radiation Safety, Radioactive Materials Program helps oversee compliance with the clinical use and research use of radioactive materials. The position provides radiation safety inspections, training, radiation safety support for clinical radiopharmaceutical therapies, management of radioactive materials packages (receipt, lab delivery, shipment), back-up support for radioactive waste management, and emergency response.

 

Experience and Education  

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety related field strongly preferred and two (2) years directly related safety experience
  • Education may be considered in lieu of experience requirements
  • Master's degree in safety related field and no experience
  • Professional certification pertinent to specific safety specialty is preferred and may be considered in lieu of degree with four (4) years of directly related safety experience
  • Pertinent Military experience may be considered for some of the required experience
  • Advanced degrees (Bachelor’s or Master’s) may be considered in lieu of experience requirements

  • Investigates safety and environmental incidents; identifying causes and how to prevent their recurrence
  • Ensures employee health & safety standards are met in all areas of the organization
  • Performs surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulation and procedures
  • Identifies potential safety hazards, prepares reports on conditions, and takes action to mitigate identified deficiencies
  • Ensures proper use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste
  • Provide assistance and safety training to departments
  • This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills  

  • Work requires exercise of considerable judgment in application and interpretation of procedures, safety regulations, standards and codes
  • Work requires contact with staff and faculty of other departments while conducting inspections or providing technical assistance
  • Effective communication and customer service skills necessary

Working Environment  

Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Working conditions involve more than average exposure to hazardous equipment or materials.
