Job Description

A Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of subsurface utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities.

  • The Construction Inspector / Locator Technician will be responsible for identifying and marking buried fiber optic cable by referencing utility prints and using specific locating equipment.
  • Uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, G.I.S. information and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
  • Read and understand utility map, prints and aerial imagery to assist in identification of underground assets.
  • Prepares various reports, forms, and memos to document work completed and problems encountered and/or resolved.
  • Investigates and prepares detailed written documentation on excavations that result in damage to underground utilities.
  • Prioritize work activities by reviewing all locate requests to determine travel route and timelines.
  • Periodically remove and replace manhole lids, weighing between 100- and 300-pounds.
  • Ability to work in all types of terrain and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches, etc.) and all types of environments (construction sites, highways, industrial, private property, etc.) and all types of weather conditions.
  • Drive extensively and get in and out of vehicle repeatedly and walk several miles per day.
  • Mark the location of underground fiber assets on roadways, private property, and other locations, as appropriate and needed, using required spray paints, flags, and other equipment.
  • Accurately and consistently wear safety gear and operate safety equipment provided.
  • Daily contact with utility managers, crews, homeowners, and contractors discussing locate issues.
  • Use laptop computer or other devises to receive, document and close out excavation notices during normal hours and after hours.
  • Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps and company personnel regarding underground facilities.
  • Operate different electronic detection equipment to locate and mark under-ground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
  • Perform light excavation to expose buried utilities when necessary.
  • Clean, maintain, stock, and secure assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Work with hand tools manual dexterity is a must.
  • Maintain a professional working attitude with co-workers and customers at all times.

  • Ability to adhere to directions and completes tasks assigned.

  • General knowledge of State and Local damage prevention regulations.
  • Understanding of safety measures relating to motor vehicle operations, manhole entry and other field related matter.
  • Knowledge of utility locating practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of G.I.S and G.P.S. Knowledge of materials, equipment, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utilities.
  • Knowledge of basic construction practices.
  • CAD experience a plus.
  • Utility construction and/or electrical technology background (or training) preferred; however, will train a person who has the ability, aptitude, and desire to learn the profession.
  • Basic understanding of G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) concepts preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Work performed near power lines and electricity.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, noise, insects, cleaning solutions.
  • The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions and extreme heat while performing the duties of this job.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Work is often performed under hazardous conditions such as within road intersections and in traffic or close to heavy equipment that is moving fast or operating under dusty, poor visibility conditions.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and the ability to obtain a DOTphysical certification.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment testing (MVR, Drug screen, and Background checks).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to adhere to Local, State, and Federal Regulations and Company Policies.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with co-workers, homeowners, and customers.
  • Ability to work full-time, in an outdoor environment and in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work both individually and in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work shifts as assigned, including daily overtime, on call, and weekends when necessary.
