SoCal Rentals Partners with Military Gaming League

Military Gaming League (MGL) major event on Veterans Day.

“What we seek in our lives as veterans are the trusted relationships, connection, and camaraderie that we shared with our fellow comrades and shipmates. That’s what we miss most in the transition to civilian life and it’s an essential part of our overall physical, emotional, and mental health.” (Sarah Holzhalb, military.com)

There are numerous services for veterans, but a new one has sprung up that is gathering some well-deserved attention. The Military Gaming League was founded by two men, Daniel Ball and Travis Williams, with a shared interest in both the military and in gaming. As per the MGL website: “Dedicated to serving the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, we have created the first and only military exclusive eSports gaming league. You’re already America’s heroes; why not be a gaming legend too?”

MGL is for veterans as well as active duty, Reserve, and National Guard service workers. It is a virtual place to come together and play. But more importantly, it’s a place to come together and connect. Studies show that social connections during and after military service reduce the chances of substance abuse, PTSD, and suicide. “What’s in life without camaraderie? For setting sail with a band of merry brothers by your side is much more gratifying than drifting aimlessly on a boat lost alone at sea,” (Saim A. Cheeda) MGL is working hard to keep people from drifting alone at sea by providing this safe place for them to connect. As Anthony McGlynn of Electronic Gaming Monthly says, “Even just having this refuge can be a huge comfort. According to a 2011 USGAO report to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, shame, fear, and personal embarrassment are among the greatest barriers to ex-soldiers seeking counseling or treatment. Having a place where they feel understood and don’t have to explain themselves can help relieve some of these burdens.”

This past Veterans’ Day weekend MGL had a major event at the Pomona Fairplex near Los Angeles. It was Counter Strike: Global Offensive eSports tournament, pitting U.S. teams against British teams. This event raised money and awareness to help with PTSD and suicide prevention. SoCal Rentals was honored to partner with MGL for this event and co-founder Travis Williams was happy to have us, saying, “It’s cool to have the support of SoCal Rentals.” We appreciate our military and we understand that freedom is not free so SoCal Rentals is proud to be a vendor for MGL.
